De Beers Group (De Beers) is the world’s leading diamond company with expertise in the exploration, mining and marketing of diamonds. Together with its joint venture partners, De Beers employs more than 20,000 people across the diamond pipeline and is the world’s largest diamond producer by value, with mining operations in Botswana, Canada, Namibia and South Africa.
De Beers’ employees are committed to ”Building Forever”, a holistic and integrated approach for creating a better future – one that is fairer, safer, cleaner and healthier; where safety, human rights and ethical integrity continue to be paramount; and where communities thrive and the environment is protected.
What the judges have to say:
De Beers has taken on the challenge of building not only a long-term positive legacy, earning trust in their diamonds but also a broader commitment to a range of projects. This includes protecting the natural world, as illustrated in the movement of elephants in their case study, projects working with local communities connected to their operations targeting for a step change in skills, health and livelihoods.
De Beers are planning to enable equal access to opportunities for women and girls and gender parity across the workforce and lead ethical practices to drive positive change across the diamond value chain including traceability, responsible sourcing and artisanal mining.
These ambitious plans are already more than proposals with detailed targets to 2030. De Beers has shown leadership well beyond the more familiar support for marketing and developing new mines.
